Hun har forsket mye på danningen av nye borgere og oppvekst i bred forstand, knyttet til foreldreskap og nabolag og institusjoner som barnehage og skole. Gjennomgående har Danielsen vært opptatt av makt og av hvordan kjønn, klasse og migrasjon virker inn på muligheter til å oppleve tilhørighet og til å delta i samfunnet. Danielsen har publisert flere bøker om kjønn og likestilling.
