Jan Magne Steinhovden is connected to the Music Department of the Teachers Training Education. His main research interest is musicking connected to identity, performance, and displacement.
Steinhovden has an MA in World Music Studies from the University of Sheffield, UK, and is currently in the final stage of finishing a PhD at the University of Bergen, with the working title: &lsquo;Music in diaspora -an ethnographic study of the roles and meanings of music among the Eritrean and Ethiopian diaspora in Bergen and its surroundings&rsquo;. <a href="https://www.uib.no/en/rs/grieg/96897/jan-magne-steinhovden">Jan Magne Steinhovden | Grieg Research School in Interdisciplinary Music Studies | UiB</a>
At NLA University college he teaches various subject both at the Kindergarten- (age 1-6) and Primary/Secondary- Teachers Training (Grade 1-7 and 5-10). He is also in charge of the international practice placement offered to KG Teacher students. 
His first higher education was teacher training with a major in music. Later he specialized in English and Intercultural Studies. He has teaching experience from national schools in both Norway and Ethiopia, as well as an international school in Ethiopia. He primarily taught music at various levels from primary school to upper secondary school. From Ethiopia he also has administrative experience as the overall principal for an Education Center including KG, KG Teacher&rsquo;s Training, High School and a Bible School.

Teaching: Update teaching Steinhovden teaches various subjects connected to music within KG-Teachers Training, and Primary and Secondary Teachers Training. His special interest is "Music in Cultures". Steinhovden is also in charge of NLA's programme for KG-teachers practice abroad, in countries inclusive Madagascar, Nepal, Thailand, and Uganda.  Steinhovden has former teaching experience from various schools in Norway in Ethiopia, from grade 2-12, especially within the field of music. He has also been principal of a Education Center in Southern Ethiopia, including a kindergarten, a KG-teachers training, a Bibel School, and a High School (grade 9-12).

Projects: Update projects University of Bergen, Norway PhD Project title:  Music in diaspora -an ethnographic study of the roles and meanings of music among the Eritrean and Ethiopian diaspora in Bergen and its surroundings Project period: 15.02.2015 - 31.12.2025 Main supervisor: <a style="box-sizing: border-box; background: transparent; color: #0075af; overflow-wrap: break-word; word-break: break-word; hyphens: auto;" href="https://www.uib.no/personer/Thomas.James.Solomon">Thomas Solomon</a> The project aims at increasing insight about and understanding of the roles and meanings of music in diaspora. Through an ethnographic study of music in the Ethiopian and Eritrean diaspora in Bergen, the study will give knowledge about how music contributes to the imagination and performance of identity in a diasporic context. According to Statistics Norway, there are more than 21 000 Eritrean and about 11 500 Ethiopian immigrants in Norway, respectively the 2nd and 4th largest African national immigrant groups (<a style="box-sizing: border-box; background: transparent; color: #0075af; overflow-wrap: break-word; word-break: break-word; hyphens: auto;" href="http://www.ssb/">www.ssb</a> 2016). Key research questions are: What roles does music play for Ethiopian and Eritrean migrants in Norway? How does music contribute to the imagination and performance of identity in a diasporic context?
