BA, MDiv, MA (University of Gothenburg), ThD (Lund University); DipHE (Sahlgrenska Academy), DipHE (Chalmers University of Technology), PGCert (Gothenburg Psychotherapy Institute)
Dr. Tomas Bokedal holds a doctorate from Lund University, and was previously Lecturer at the Lutheran School of Theology in Gothenburg, Sweden (2000&ndash;2007) and at University of Aberdeen, Scotland (2007&ndash;2024). Educated in New Testament studies, theology and hermeneutics, Dr. Bokedal&rsquo;s primary fields of research concern Christian origins, paratextual features of the New Testament, and the relation of &lsquo;Scripture and Theology.&rsquo; His approach to these topics involves research into the transmission of the gospel tradition, the canon and canonical criticism, papyrology/codicology, textual and ritual theory, Pauline theology, early Christian confession, and patristic exegesis.

What is the theological status of the Bible? How have the Scriptures been received theologically through the centuries? And how should they be received today? How can biblical studies and systematic theology interact in fruitful ways and be fruitful for the Christian faith in the context of the 21st century? These are the project’s leading questions. The relationship between Scripture and Creed is intricate, intimate, complex, and disputed. Nevertheless, it is an inescapable relationship deserving of attention. This project engages a couple of facets of this long-standing interconnectedness both in noting the existence of creedal fragments in the Scriptures and observing the effect the canonical Scripture had on the shaping of the credo. As an outcome of the first phase of the project an anthology with Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht is being prepared with some 30+ contributors. Nevertheless, it is an inescapable relationship deserving of attention. The renowned creedal scholar J.N.D. Kelly highlighted a couple of facets of this long-standing interconnectedness both in noting the existence of “creedal fragments” in the Scriptures and observing the effect the canonical Scripture had on the shaping of the credo. Such an interchange and interplay of influence only serves to raise further questions. What can be said about the interplay of creed and confession and the formation of Scripture or, inversely, about Scripture and the formation of the credo? Indeed, what can be said about this rather opaque and often convoluted relationship throughout differing eras of ecclesial history? What about today? The present volume’s thirty-plus chapters seek to cast light on precisely this nexus between Scripture and Creed. Its authors, representing a wide variety of research areas as well as professional, denominational, and national backgrounds, offer fresh perspectives on both well-trodden topics and comparatively unfamiliar lacunae. All told, this proposed volume will contribute towards articulating the conflicted and intimate interconnectedness between these foundational entities in Christian tradition, thus doubtlessly also contributing to further interest in this interdisciplinary theme. The anthology, we hope, will appear in print in 2025 to mark the 1700-year anniversary of the First Council of Nicea in 325.
