By using the truncation character, usually an asterisk (*), you can broaden a search by searching for the root of a word, which will give you different endings of the word. Child* will then give hits on childhood, childcare, childprotection, children's school, etc.

If you are searching for a term consisting of several words, for example global warming, you can put the term in quotation marks: If you type "global warming", you are searching for the phrase global warming, and not global and warming as two separate words.

By combining two keywords with AND, you will only get hits that contain both keywords. This search technique sharpens the search and limits the number of hits.

By combining two keywords with OR, you will get hits that contain one, the other, or both keywords. This search technique expands the search and gives you more hits. You should use OR between synonyms.

By combining two keywords with NOT, you will only get hits that contain the first keyword while excluding the keyword after NOT. Be aware that this search technique can potentially exclude relevant literature.
