What does it cost?
As an exchange student, you do not have to pay tuition fees to NLA University College, but you must pay the semester fee to the student welfare organization to keep your student status at NLA.
Erasmus+
If you travel through the Erasmus+ program, you do not pay any tuition fees, as well as you receive an Erasmus grant. If you receive grant from Lånekassen, you receive the Erasmus grant as well as the grant from Lånekassen.
The grant amounts to 470/530 EUR per month:
- 530 EUR for those traveling to Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, France, Germany, Netherlands.
- 470 EUR for other countries.
From autumn 2024, a travel grant will be introduced in the Erasmus program. The amount of the travel grant depends on the distance between the your study location in Norway and the host institution abroad.
The grant requires that NLA has a valid Erasmus+ agreement with the host institution. Read more about Erasmus+ here.
Support from Lånekassen
For students who are eligible to receive loans and grants from Lånekassen:
Check on Lånekassen's website how much support you can get if you go to Nordic countries or countries outside the Nordic region. You can apply to Lånekassen for loan and grats after you have received an admission letter from the host institution and got your courses approved.
Some countries provide more grants:
If you go on exchange to Japan, China, South Africa, or South Korea, you will receive NOK 4,277 per month in addition to the basic loan and travel support for the academic year 2024-25. This grant can be given for up to ten months.
Things to Consider
As an exchange student, there are some extra things to consider. You should budget for necessary insurance costs. If you are traveling to countries outside Europe, sometimes applying for a visa could cost you money. Furthermore, exchange rates vary, and these variations can affect how much you actually get for your Norwegian kroner when you are on exchange.
Specifically for the USA
A comprehensive health insurance policy is required for all students studying in the USA. You need this both to be granted a visa and to have access to healthcare during your stay. Your host institution will inform you about what kind of insurance they require/recommend you to purchase. These vary in price, and in exceptional cases, you can apply for an exemption if you have student insurance that covers as well as the one offered there. Remember that costs associated with health insurance are not necessarily covered by the basic support from Lånekassen. It is very common for students who choose to study in the USA to use their own funds to support their stay there.
