Explanation of grade and appeals

Explanation of grade

If you would like an explanation of your grade for written work, you must request this within one week of the examination result being announced.

·  Explanation requests need to be submitted in Studentweb under ‘Explanation of grade and appeals’. Choose the relevant course. The explanation will be available in Studentweb when it is ready.

·  The explanation will be provided as soon as possible, and normally within two weeks. However, it may take longer during holiday periods.

·  If it is not possible to request the explanation in Studentweb and you are within the one-week deadline, use the online form and select ‘Explanation of grade’.

In the case of oral exams and assessments of practical skills, requests for an explanation of your grade must be submitted immediately after the grade is announced.

Appealing your grade

·  You can appeal your grade for a written exam. It is not necessary to request an explanation of your grade first. If you are going to appeal, you must do so within three weeks of the examination result being announced. If you have asked for an explanation of your grade, the appeal deadline is three weeks after this was provided.

·  Submit your appeal in Studentweb under ‘Explanation of grade and appeals’.

·  In the event of a re-assessment, the examiners will not be given the original grade, the explanation of the grade or the student’s reason for appeal. At least two examiners are used for re-assessments, at least one of whom will be external.

·   It can take up to three months from the appeal deadline until you are notified of the result. The Office of the Registrar will notify you of the outcome of the appeal in writing.

·  If the new result deviates by two or more grades from the original assessment, a further assessment must be made before the final grade is determined, see section 5-3 (6) of the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges. This provision entered into force on 1 July 2018.

·  Your grade following re-assessment may be higher or lower than the original one. The new grade is final and cannot be appealed.

Right to appeal a group examination:

·  There is also an individual right to appeal a group examination. Any ensuing change of grade will only apply to the person/persons who appealed the grade.

Requesting an explanation and appealing a practical/oral examination

·  If you would like an explanation of your grade after an oral or practical exam, you must request this immediately after receiving your grade.

·  It is not possible to appeal the grade for a practical/oral exam, but it is possible to appeal on the grounds of formal errors.

Appealing on the grounds of formal errors

·  Formal errors include, for example, errors in the exam questions, errors in the conduct of the examination or in the grading process that in your view may have impacted on the result.

·  The deadline for appealing on the grounds of a formal error is three weeks after you know or should have known what you want to appeal.

·  An appeal on the grounds of a formal error may result in a re-assessment of your answer paper or in you being permitted to resit the exam.

·  If you want to appeal on the grounds of a formal error in the exam, you must send or hand in a written, signed appeal to the Office of the Registrar at the relevant campus. You must state the reason for the appeal.
