Global Journalism Reporting Project

Upon completion of the course, the student has achieved the following learning outcomes:

• can explain possible connections between journalism and democracy building in a given geographical context
• has knowledge of basic theories about society and culture

• can produce journalism about or from societies other than their own or from multi-cultural environments

• can familiarize themselves with the cultural and societal context of journalism
• can show understanding and respect for other societies and for people who live and work under different conditions

The course is structured with lectures and seminars at NLA University College.

The focus is on how globalization affects journalism both in Norway and in other parts of the world. Current topics include global media communication, how other societies and ethnic groups are covered in Norwegian media, the professional challenges journalists face in dealing with other cultural viewpoints, and the extent to which journalistic values can be said to be universal or linked to a particular society.

The following requirement must be approved prior to the final assessment:

• 80% class attendance

• Reporting project and individual reflection paper

The students submit a journalistic in-depth reportage (reporting project) and a reflection paper which are assessed together. The reportage is a group project while the reflection paper is an individual product. Each student receives an individual grade, thus the grade may be appealed on individually.

The length of the reflection paper shall be 1500 words (+/- 15%). The scope of the reportage will depend on media type and the size of each student group.
