Master in Global Journalism

About the program
The master’s programme in Global Journalism started in 2015 and we have had students from more than 30 countries acound the world, including nations such as Brazil, South Africa, Ghana, Ethiopia, Nepal, China, Denmark and Norway.

What will you learn?
You will study megatrends in the global media landscape and journalism in different parts of the world. Freedom of expression is a relevant topic and you will investigate how media are affected by globalization. You will learn about new media technology and what it does to communication around the world. We emphasize the importance of professional ethics in an increasingly complex media landscape, and reflect on the role that one’s own worldview plays in the creation of news.

Where can you work?
If you are a journalist or a communication worker in an internationally oriented organization, or if you have a position where knowledge of journalism and media is generally important, the master in Global Journalism will top up your competence. The degree is also highly relevant for persons working with political science or for practitioners in the cultural industries. You will be competent to teach journalism and media studies on different levels in upper secondary school and in higher education. Several of our graduates have pursued a PhD after having completed the Global Journalism programme, either in Norway or abroad. Be aware that if you are an international student, you cannot expect to get a job in the Norwegian media industry afterwards since the Norwegian media primarily operate in the local language. The programme assumes that candidates will return to their home country and pursue a job locally after having completed their studies, but the degree is obviously also suitable for internationally oriented organizations.

Course structure 
The programme is organized as a two-year programme with two semesters each year (August to December and January to June). The first semester consists of mandatory courses in Kristiansand, Norway. The second semester consists of optional courses in Norway, or you can spend the semester abroad. The third and fourth semesters are reserved for the master’s thesis, including preparation and fieldwork.

Mobility 
In the second semester, you have the opportunity to study at a partner institution in South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Hong Kong or Georgia. The programme has exchange agreements with five top institutions in the field: University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa (UKZN), United States International University in Nairobi, Kenya (USIU), Uganda Christian University in Mukono, Uganda (UCU), Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), and the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs Tbilisi, Georgia (GIPA).
